Church and School volunteers meet twice a month to make sandwiches for people without shelter in downtown Miami. With the help of Bethel AME, the sandwiches are distributed. Throughout the year, socks, shoes, and backpacks are also distributed. We meet the fourth Wednesday of each month at 4:00 p.m. at St. Thomas to make sandwiches, and service hours are available. Chapman Partnership provides emergency housing, meals, health care, day care, job training, and job placement. Monthly at the Downtown and at the Homestead facilities, St. Thomas provides the cost of the night’s meal and volunteers to serve the meal. Volunteers are needed!

We join St. Andrew’s volunteers on Thursday mornings to pack and distribute food bags and to assist with the Thrift Shop. At Thanksgiving, food bags are distributed. Clients come from as far south as Homestead and as far west as West Kendall for weekly assistance in putting food on their families’ tables.

St. Thomas’ annual Shrove Tuesday Dinner proudly supports the Women and Girls Initiative in Haiti, a Partners in Health program that provides tuition scholarships, essential resources, and mental health services. For the past nine years, this cherished tradition has helped empower women and girls through education and care, and we are honored to continue our commitment to this vital cause.

South Florida Haiti Project was officially founded in 2009 as a coalition of Episcopal Churches, serving the people of Bondeau, a small community in rural Southwest Haiti home to about 3,500 residents, with education. Family dwellings are scattered along the shore and up the mountain with Bon Samaritan School and Church as the community hub. As in much of Haiti, no basic infrastructure exists to provide water (potable or otherwise), electricity or sanitation. St. Thomas is proud to join the South Florida Haiti Project of our Diocese to help support the Bondeau community.

Socktober: We collect socks as part of the national “Socktober” outreach to supply people living with homelessness with clean, warm socks for the months ahead.  New or “gently used” adult socks are delivered to the Greater Bethel AME Church in Overtown for distribution as needed throughout the fall and winter.

Thanksgiving Baskets for St. Andrew's Food Pantry: In November, we join St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School and several other churches to provide hundreds of Thanksgiving bags with food items and gift cards for the people who come to St. Andrew’s Food Pantry for food assistance. St. Thomas' fifth grade students take a field trip to deliver these donations the week before Thanksgiving as part of their service learning curriculum.

Natalee's Have-a-Heart Tree: We provide supplies and gifts for newborns to age 2 through the Jasmine Project, sponsored by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics and Healthy Start Coalition of Miami-Dade. Parishioners join in Christmas giving by taking a child’s name from the tree and providing a gift.

“Natalee’s Have-a-Heart Tree” was named in memory of Natalee Jenks, who coordinated St. Thomas’ participation in the Jasmine Project for 20 years. The beloved librarian of St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School, Natalee dedicated countless hours every Christmas season to coordinating the Have-a-Heart Tree to provide gifts for expectant mothers and newborns in the Jasmine Project. Adding her name to this meaningful tree carries her legacy on.
