Our very own alumna Brezlan Malina was a speaker at TEDx Coconunt Grove, taking place this past spring. Brezlan is a sophomore at Ransom Everglades School. As an active participant on the robotics and debate teams, she has seen the ups and downs that occur in the competitive realm. Through this process she has learned to identify her biggest weakness: perfectionism. Her ability to be introspective and thoughtful about overcoming her fears of failure has brought her onto the TEDx stage; yet another challenge she is willing to take on with what she’s learned. Here she talks about the societal expectations of perfectionism, their devastating impact on humanity, and how we can escape them. For more information about TEDx visit: We are proud of you, Brezlan!

To say Merrett Fay '09 has a lot going on is a huge understatement! He skipped 11th grade and graduated with honors last year from Westminster. He was going to spend this gap year traveling the world and competing as a Pro in the Wake Park World Series -- but, these plans changed when he tore his ACL during a wake board competition in the beginning of last summer. BUT, he made lemonade out of lemons and heavily pursued his second passion, which is photography. He started his year of travel off by spending three weeks in India with National Geographic. Also, over the past year, Merrett has traveled to Japan, Australia, Thailand, Costa Rica, British Virgin Islands, Dubai, Abu Dabhi, South Africa, London, Scotland, and El Salvador shooting photos for several wakeboard magazines as well as freelancing, which has helped him pay for so much travel. Merrett has also been accepted to spend a week in Iceland with one of the most famous photographers in the world, Chris Burkard, for an in-depth photography workshop at the end of May. Before Merrett starts at the University of Florida in the fall, he will travel to Russia, Portugal, and South Korea. Merrett plans on publishing a coffee table book about his experiences and photography during this amazing year. It has been an incredible year for the family and for him. St. Thomas is so proud of Merrett!
