Parent University Session Illuminates AI's Role in Modern Parenting

Understanding AI's impact on social-emotional development is essential for parents, as it can shape how children communicate, empathize, and navigate relationships in a digital age, blending technology with human connection.

Parent University at St. Thomas is an initiative designed to educate and empower families as partners, advocates, and active participants in their children's education. As part of the parent component of our Social Emotional Learning curriculum, Parent University aims to help parents establish and connect with their ‘village’, and allow parents to model the importance of being lifelong learners for their students. 

In a recent Parent University session, parents explored how artificial intelligence (AI) can simplify and enhance family life. The workshop, titled Empowering STEPS Parents with Generative AI, was led by Tamara Walsh, a proud St. Thomas parent and founder of AI Empowerment Now.

During this informative discussion, Walsh shared practical tips and tricks for how parents can integrate AI tools into their daily routines. She demonstrated how AI can assist parents in various tasks, from providing personalized educational support for their students to organizing detailed itineraries for future family vacations. 

Emphasizing the importance of responsible AI usage, Walsh also discussed the limitations of AI, cautioning parents against over-reliance on technology and emphasizing the irreplaceable value of human discernment. She encouraged parents to initiate conversations with their children about AI, which can help them understand both its benefits and potential risks. By engaging in these discussions early, families can develop a balanced perspective on technology's role in their lives.

By offering these enlightening workshops and resources, Parent University supports the partnership between our school and parent community, which in turn enhances student success and fosters a supportive learning environment. By addressing contemporary topics like AI integration, Parent University equips our parents with the knowledge and tools to foster their own learning, and continue helping their students succeed.
