Parent University: Exploring the Gut-Brain Connection

Parent University: Exploring the Gut-Brain Connection
Avery Kiefer

As part of our ongoing Parent University initiative at St. Thomas, we recently welcomed Ariel Suazo-Maler, a cognitive neuroscientist and nutrition expert, to share insights on the gut-brain connection in a presentation titled "Happy Gut, Happy Mind." With a background in neuroscience, psychology, and biochemistry from institutions such as MIT, Harvard, and Columbia University, Suazo-Maler brought a wealth of knowledge to help parents better understand how gut health influences the mental and physical well-being of their children.

By focusing on research showing that the gut plays a significant role in a variety ways including emotional regulation, parents were introduced to the idea that the gut, referred to as the "second brain" by Dr. Michael D. Gershon, can influence a child's mood and behavior. Families also gained practical strategies for supporting their children's overall well-being through nutrition, stress management, and lifestyle choices. Suazo-Maler emphasized the importance of:

  • Encouraging a balanced and varied diet rich in natural, whole foods
  • Creating positive mealtime experiences and involving children in food preparation
  • Recognizing how factors like stress, processed foods, and antibiotic overuse can impact gut health
  • Developing mindful habits that support overall wellness

This insightful presentation concluded with a productive Q&A session, where parents had the opportunity to ask questions about gut-friendly nutrition, strategies for fostering long-term health in children, and more.

At St. Thomas, we are committed to equipping our parent community with knowledge and resources to support their children's growth in all aspects of life. We look forward to future Parent University sessions where we will continue exploring important topics that impact the well-being of our entire school community.
